8 et 9 Le prophète fait évidemment allusion à des scandales récents qui avaient eu lieu, l'un dans le pays à l'est du Jourdain, en Galaad, l'autre à l'ouest, près de Sichem.

Galaad. L'expression : ville de malfaiteurs, pourrait faire penser qu'il s'agit ici d'une ville proprement dite ; et en effet, Eusèbe mentionne une ville de ce nom dans le Liban ; mais cet endroit est totalement inconnu, du reste, et il est plus naturel de penser au pays de Galaad, si connu, à l'est du Jourdain, qui est peuplé de malfaiteurs, comme une ville l'est de ses habitants.

Sichem : dans le pays d'Ephraïm, entre l'Ebal et le Garizim. C'est par là que passait la route traversant la Palestine du nord au sud et, par conséquent, le chemin des caravanes des dix tribus quand elles se rendaient à Béthel pour les fêtes du veau d'or. Or, il y avait des prêtres assez oublieux de leur vocation pour se mettre aux aguets sur cette route comme une bande de brigands et tomber à l'improviste sur les passants qu'ils assassinaient.
