La richesse trop vite acquise disparaît vite. Celle qu’on amasse petit à petit ne cesse de grandir.

Quelques manuscrits ponctuent les trois mots du premier membre du verset, de manière à leur faire signifier : Richesse diminue plus (vite) que vanité : les richesses s'évanouissent comme un souffle. Mais ainsi, la seconde partie du verset ne se comprend pas. La vraie ponctuation massorétique conduit au sens que nous proposons : Les richesses qu'on obtient par des moyens rapides, mais hasardeux, par des spéculations d'où l'élément du travail est absent, ne jouissent pas de la bénédiction de Dieu.

Peu à peu, littéralement : par main, poignée après poignée.
