Proverbes 16.6

Par la bonté et la vérité on expie la faute, et par la crainte de l'Eternel on se détourne du mal.
La faute est *expiée par la bonté et la fidélité et, par respect pour l’Eternel, on se détourne du mal.

A proprement parler, la miséricorde et la fidélité n'expient ni religieusement, ni juridiquement, une faute commise envers Dieu ou envers les hommes, mais on peut par là, d'une part, éviter le châtiment (Daniel 4.27) et, de l'autre, prouver à ses frères lésés la sincérité des regrets que l'on éprouve.

Mais la crainte de l'Eternel est plus précieuse encore que la miséricorde et la fidélité ; elle a une valeur préventive.
