Pour le premier membre, comparez 17.3. De même que le creuset fait connaître la qualité d'un métal en mettant en évidence les scories qui s'y mêlaient, de même, si l'on veut se rendre compte de la valeur morale d'un homme, il faut étudier ses goûts, son idéal. Dis-moi ce que tu aimes, je te dirai qui tu es.

D'autres : Et l'homme selon sa réputation. Le minerai sort épuré du creuset : l'homme a besoin de l'épreuve du jugement d'autrui ; pour valoir réellement quelque chose, il faut qu'il ait résisté à cette épreuve.

D'autres encore : Et l'homme pour sa louange. L'homme ne doit pas prendre pour bon argent tout le bien qu'on dit de lui. Il faut qu'il sache en rabattre.

Ou enfin : Ainsi est éprouvé l'homme par la bouche qui le loue. C'est en face d'une louange qu'il montre s'il est sage ou vain.
