Proverbes 9.7

Corriger un moqueur, c’est s’attirer la confusion et reprendre un *méchant : s’attirer un affront.
Celui qui reprend le moqueur s'attire le dédain, Et celui qui corrige le méchant reçoit un outrage.

Les versets 7 à 10 ne sont pas, comme on l'a cru parfois, une adjonction postérieure venant mal à propos interrompre le fil du discours, qui reprendrait au verset 11. La Sagesse, qui vient de s'adresser aux simples, explique pourquoi elle laisse de côté les moqueurs et le méchant, qui ont déjà pris position contre la Sagesse (Matthieu 7.6).

Qui reprend un moqueur. On s'attendrait au même verbe qu'en fin de verset 3) : Qui appelle. Mais en face d'un moqueur, la Sagesse ne pourrait que reprendre ou censurer, et le moqueur, blessé, n'écouterait pas (Jean 3.20), tandis que (verset 8) le sage, si même la souveraine sagesse trouve à reprendre en lui, accepte avec reconnaissance sa discipline.
