Ces versets sont tirés presque textuellement du cantique d'Anne. Comparez versets 7 et 8 avec 1Samuel 2.8 ; verset 9 avec 1Samuel 2.5.

De la poussière, du fumier : images bien propres à exprimer le dernier degré de l'abaissement et de la pauvreté. On voit encore, en Syrie et en Palestine, des malheureux, lépreux ou autres, qui, bannis de la société des hommes, font leur gîte dans des amas de cendre ou de fumier et implorent de là la charité des passants.
