Mais ils continuèrent... Il n'a pas encore été parlé expressément de murmures, mais l'allusion faite aux scènes de Massa et Mériba (versets 15 et 16) a rappelé à l'auteur comme aux lecteurs les premiers témoignages de l'incrédulité du peuple. Le manque de pain dans une terre aride fournit à Israël l'occasion de murmurer de nouveau. Le don de la manne et des cailles (Exode 16.1) précéda, il est vrai, le miracle de Réphidim (Exode 17.1) ; mais le psalmiste, parlant en poète, et non en historien, ne s'astreint ni ici, ni plus tard, dans l'énumération des plaies d'Egypte, à un ordre chronologique rigoureux ; d'ailleurs, ici aussi, il réunit deux récits, dont l'un se rapporte aux premiers temps, l'autre (Nombres 11.1) aux derniers temps du séjour au désert.
