La citation, tirée de Genèse 17.5, forme une parenthèse ou une proposition incidente.

Les mots devant Dieu en qui il a cru...se rattachent à père de nous tous : (verset 16) il est père de nous tous devant Dieu, au jugement de ce Dieu devant qui il se tient, croyant à sa promesse et recevant ainsi le titre de père des croyants.

Il serait moins naturel de relier devant Dieu à la parole citée, puisque c'est Dieu qui la prononce. La citation sert de transition entre l'idée, exprimée à verset 16, qu'Abraham est le père de nous tous, idée qu'elle confirme, et l'idée qui va être exposée, (versets 17-22) que c'est encore par la foi qu'Abraham a eu une postérité et qu'il est devenu père de cet Isaac dont la naissance était nécessaire pour que la promesse du salut eut son accomplissement.

Cette naissance au moins pouvait paraître un fruit de la chair.

"L'apôtre a demandé à verset 1 : Qu'a obtenu Abraham par la chair ? Il a obtenu son fils Isaac, pouvait répondre le Juif, par conséquent le peuple élu, par conséquent tout...Sapant par l'écriture la dernière racine du préjuge judaïque, Paul démontre que la naissance d'lsaac, non moins que la grâce de la justification et la promesse de l'héritage, a été un don accordé à la foi." Godet.

D'après beaucoup d'interprètes, l'application de l'exemple d'Abraham aux croyants commence avec verset 17 : sa foi est de même nature que la nôtre, car elle s'attache à Dieu qui vivifie les morts. Ils méconnaissent la place que tient dans les versets suivants le fait même de la naissance d'lsaac obtenue par la foi d'Abraham.

- Il crut à Dieu qui vivifie les morts et qui appelle les choses qui ne sont point comme si elles étaient. La parole toute puissante et créatrice de Dieu, qui fait la promesse, tirera au besoin, pour l'accomplir, des morts de leur tombe ou un univers du néant.

Pour Dieu, appeler, c'est créer. (Psaumes 50.1 ; Esaïe 40.26)

Tel est l'inébranlable fondement sur lequel repose la foi. Ces paroles renferment du reste une évidente allusion au miracle que Dieu fit en Abraham et en Sarah pour accomplir sa promesse. (verset 19)
