Après avoir nommé la prédestination et son but, l'apôtre les actes par lesquels Dieu exécute, dans le temps et pour chaque élu à son tour, le dessein qu'il a arrêté par devers lui de toute éternité.

C'est d'abord l'appel (ou la vocation) déjà mentionné à verset 28. Jésus l'a décrit (Jean 6.44) comme l'action que le

Père exerce sur les hommes pour les attirer au Fils ; cette action comprend l'œuvre de la loi, qui prépare l'âme pour Christ, (Galates 3.24) le revoit de la conscience, les aspirations souvent douloureuses que les promesses de Dieu font naître dans le cœur du pécheur, jusqu'au moment où Jésus-Christ luimême se révèle à lui comme le Sauveur "plein de Grâce et de vérité".

Alors s'ouvrent à lui les sources abondantes de la justification, cette grâce que l'apôtre a exposée dans toute sa richesse (Romains 3 à Romains 5) : il les a aussi justifiés, il leur a appliqué individuellement la déclaration de justice, qui assure le pardon de leurs péchés à tous les croyants. Il leur a procuré ainsi la paix, après laquelle leur âme soupirait.

Enfin l'œuvre divine s'achève par le triomphe définitif de la vie jusque là cachée sous l'infirmité de la chair, par la glorification de tout l'homme, corps et âme, admis à habiter les nouveaux cieux et la nouvelle terre.

Il est à remarquer que l'apôtre parle même de ce dernier développement au passé, comme d'un fait déjà accompli. C'est qu'à ses yeux, l'œuvre du salut, que Dieu, immuable dans sa fidélité, ne commence jamais pour la laisser inachevée, (Philippiens 1.6) est déjà accomplie pour toute âme qui en a éprouvé les premiers effets.

Jésus, notre Sauveur, a été glorifié déjà. Dans la glorification du Chef celle de tous les membres du corps est virtuellement accomplie. (Ephésiens 2.6)
