C'est l'ange de l'Eternel qui prend sa défense, comme Jésus celle de la pécheresse.

Ceux qui se tenaient devant lui. Il s'agit des simples anges qui l'entouraient comme ses serviteurs.

Enlevez de dessus lui... Le premier acte de grâce de la part de l'ange est d'enlever, le second est de donner. Il commence par faire enlever ce qui constitue la faute, c'est l'emblème de l'absolution divine prononcée sur le coupable. Puis il donne ce qui constitue l'état de justice, les vêtements purs avec lesquels Jéhosua aurait dû se présenter devant lui ; c'est l'emblème de la position de juste que Dieu rend au sacrificateur et au peuple sincèrement humiliés. Après cela, rien ne pourra plus s'opposer à ce qu'il fonctionne désormais devant Dieu, comme souverain sacrificateur, en faveur du peuple.

Regarde... L'acte n'existe encore que sous la forme de l'ordre donné au serviteur. Cependant Jéhosua doit l'envisager comme déjà accompli, et se voir purifié et juste avant de l'être en effet.

D'habits de fête. Le terme signifie proprement habits qu'on ôte, c'est-à-dire des vêtements qu'on ne porte qu'exceptionnellement et que l'on dépose une fois l'occasion passée, pour reprendre les habits ordinaires.
