Zacharie 4.2

Et me dit : Que vois-tu ? Et je répondis : Je regarde, et voilà un chandelier tout d'or, et un bassin au-dessus de son sommet, et ses sept lampes sont sur lui, avec sept tuyaux pour les sept lampes qui sont à son sommet.

Et il me dit... Par cette question, l'ange aiguise en quelque sorte le regard du prophète et le stimule à discerner ce qui apparaît.

Et je dis : Le prophète décrit ce qu'il découvre successivement dans le tableau qui s'offre à lui. Le texte massorétique lit et il me dit, comme si c'était l'ange lui-même qui décrivait la vision ; mais la variante d'après laquelle nous avons traduit nous parait absolument préférable.

Un candélabre. Le mot employé est celui par lequel était désigné le chandelier d'or dans le sanctuaire. Le terme de candélabre exprime mieux que celui de chandelier tout un système de lampes.

Son bassin : un réservoir d'huile en forme de boule, qui était placé au sommet du candélabre.

Ses sept lampes. Dans le chandelier du sanctuaire, les sept lampes étaient sur un seul plan horizontal ; mais on ne peut admettre qu'il en fût de même dans le candélabre contemplé par Zacharie, à cause de ce réservoir central qui alimentait toutes les lampes. Rien de semblable n'avait lieu dans le chandelier du temple, dont les lampes étaient fournies d'huile chaque jour par le sacrificateur de service. Nous devons donc plutôt nous représenter les sept lampes comme formant un cercle autour de la tige centrale, au sommet de laquelle (al rôschah) se trouvait le bassin qui les alimentait.

Sept conduits pour chacune. On a essayé de traduire le terme hébreu sept et sept dans le sens de quatorze, ce qui aurait fait deux conduits pour chaque lampe ; mais le seul sens possible est : sept conduits pour chacune des sept lampes... d'après l'usage de la langue hébraïque constaté par 2Samuel 21.20 ; 1Chroniques 20.6. Cela nous confirme dans la pensée que les sept lampes formaient un cercle autour du bassin servant de réservoir ; ce n'était qu'ainsi que sept conduits pouvaient conduire de ce réservoir à chaque lampe.
