33 à 40 La famille de Saül.

L'auteur intercale ici la généalogie des descendants de Saül, à cause de l'importance de cette famille en Israël ; il y a été naturellement amené par la mention de sa présence à Jérusalem dans les versets précédents.

Ner engendra Kis. Cette donnée étonne, puisque d'après 9.36 et d'après le texte primitif de notre verset 30, Ner était frère de Kis. En outre, 1Samuel 9.1, Kis est fils d'Abiel. L'indication la plus complète est celle de 1Samuel 14.51 : Kis, père de Saül, et Ner, père d'Abner, étaient fils d'Abiel. Il faut donc peut-être lire dans notre verset 33 : Ner engendra Abner, Kis engendra Saül.

Les fils de Saül ne sont pas indiqués exactement de la même façon 1Samuel 14.49, où nous n'en trouvons que trois et où à la place d'Abinadab le texte porte Jischvi. Cependant Abinadab est mentionné par 1Samuel 31.2, qui omet d'autre part Jischvi. Donc, si Jischvi n'est pas une faute de copiste dans 1Samuel 14.49, c'est probablement, un autre nom d'Abinadab. Eschbaal, qui ne figure ni 1Samuel 14.49, ni 1Samuel 31.2, est le plus jeune fils de Saül, le même qu'Isboseth, qui régna après son père sur onze tribus. Voir 2Samuel 2.8.
