Exode 17.1-6. La signification spirituelle que l'apôtre voit dans le fait historique, est ici la même que dans les paroles qui précèdent ; seulement, il est plus explicite encore, en nommant Christ comme renfermé sous le symbole dont il s'agit.

Ce témoignage prouve, comme tant d'autres (1Pierre 1.10 ; Jean 1.1, note) que l'auteur de toutes les révélations et de toutes les œuvres divines de l'ancienne alliance, aussi bien que de la nouvelle, c'est le Logos de Dieu, la Parole éternelle, Jésus-Christ. Lui seul a pu s'écrier au milieu de son peuple, dans le désert comme sous les portiques du temple : "Quiconque a soif qu'il vienne à moi et qu'il boive !"

- Les mots : qui les suivait sont évidemment une métonymie, dans laquelle le symbole est pris pour la chose symbolisée, le rocher, pour Christ. Christ suivait son peuple pour désaltérer les corps par la puissance miraculeuse qu'il prêtait à Moïse, et les âmes fidèles par les eaux vives qui jaillissent en vie éternelle.

La tradition rabbinique prétendait qu'un rocher matériel suivait le camp d'Israël à travers le désert.

Plusieurs interprètes (de Wette, Meyer dans ses premières éditions), ont pensé que Paul s'appropriait cette fable et croyait que Christ s'était incarné dans ce rocher. M. Godet répond avec raison : "Comment se figurer un instant le plus spiritualiste des apôtres admettant et enseignant aux Eglises de pareilles puérilités ? En tous cas, si même il a voulu faire allusion à une fable aussi ridicule, ce dont nous doutons, il l'a fait de manière à rendre sensible la distance entre l'opinion rabbinique et la sienne propre."
