Préconnu signifie aussi prédestiné selon le conseil de Dieu soit que la prescience divine se rapporté à Christ, comme ici, soit qu'elle s'applique aux élus. (verset 2) Dieu avait déterminé dès avant la fondation du monde la rédemption (1Corinthiens 2.7) et ceux qui y auraient part : (Ephésiens 1.4) cela suppose évidemment que le Rédempteur était dès lors aussi préconnu et prédestiné pour cette œuvre. (Jean 17.24 ; Actes 17.31)

C'est en Christ, son Fils bien-aimé, que Dieu a aimé le monde, (Jean 3.16) l'humanité dont il prévoyait le péché, et qui, sans cet amour, eût été perdue.

Cet enseignement nous fait entrevoir comment, sous le règne d'un Dieu qui est sainteté et amour, a pu se produire le mystère insondable de la chute. Et comme le Sauveur a été manifesté (grec) au dernier des temps, (Hébreux 1.1 ; 9.26) celui où l'apôtre écrivait, il voit dans ce fait de la miséricorde éternelle de Dieu un nouveau motif d'obéissance et d'amour, qu'il indique à ses lecteurs : à cause de vous.
