Grec : En quoi vous tressaillez d'allégresse.

- En quoi se rapporte à tout ce qui précède versets 3-5, c'est-à-dire à cette espérance vivante, à cet héritage céleste dont les chrétiens ont l'assurance ; c'est là pour eux un sujet d'allégresse.

Quelques interprètes pensent que le pronom relatif se rapporte au mot qui précède immédiatement : le dernier temps. (verset 5) Ce serait seulement au dernier temps qu'aurait lieu cette allégresse, "en la révélation de Jésus-Christ ;" (verset 7) le verbe au présent : vous tressaillez, serait pris dans le sens du futur ; (comparer : Matthieu 26.2) c'est ainsi que traduisent Luther et d'autres.

Mais après avoir décrit le salut assuré aux croyants, après en avoir béni Dieu avec effusion, (versets 3-5) l'apôtre ne doute pas que cette immense grâce ne soit déjà actuellement pour les chrétiens auxquels il écrit le sujet d'une grande et sainte joie, d'une joie qui peut, par sa nature même, subsister au sein des diverses tentations ou épreuves auxquelles ils sont exposés. (1Pierre 4.13 ; Jacques 1.2,3)

"Il les exhorte plutôt qu'il ne les loue. Car son intention est de montrer quel profit nous revient de cette espérance de salut : à savoir joie spirituelle, par laquelle non seulement est adoucie l'aigreur et âpreté de tous maux, mais aussi toute tristesse est surmontée...Mais les fidèles ne sont point troncs de bois, et ils n'ont tellement dépouillé le sentiment humain, qu'ils ne soient touchés de douleur, qu'ils ne craignent les dangers, que la pauvreté ne leur soit ennuyeuse et les persécutions âpres et difficiles à porter...Mais la tristesse de tous ces maux est tellement adoucie par la foi, qu'ils ne laissent point pourtant de se réjouir. D'autre part, quoique la joie surmonte la tristesse, elle ne l'ôte pas entièrement, d'autant qu'elle ne nous dépouille pas de toute fragilité humaine." Calvin.

"Bien que vous soyez attristés maintenant, pour un peu de temps," Ces deux termes, qui forment en grec un pléonasme sont destinés à marquer la courte durée des souffrances du chrétien en regard de l'éternelle félicité qui l'attend (1Pierre 5.10) L'auteur ajoute : s'il le faut, car le chrétien n'est pas nécessairement toujours exposé à l'affliction ; mais si elle lui est envoyée, qu'il la considère comme une épreuve qui doit se produire, qui est selon la volonté de Dieu (1Pierre 3.17)

En appelant les souffrances de ses lecteurs des épreuves ou tentations, (Jacques 1.2) Pierre montre ce qu'elles sont, soit dans l'intention des persécuteurs, qui espèrent par elles ébranler les croyants, soit dans l'intention de Dieu, qui les leur inflige pour les fortifier dans la foi. (verset 7)
