Ainsi, la parure ne doit pas être (gr) celle du dehors, (verset 3) décrite par l'apôtre, mais celle de (gr) l'homme caché du cœur (le cœur, siège des affections, des dispositions morales). Ce terme est à peu près synonyme de "l'homme intérieur ;" (Romains 7.22 ; 2Corinthiens 4.16) mais Pierre choisit à dessein un mot qui exprime le contraire du désir de paraître, la modestie qui se cache et s'efface volontiers.

En quoi consistera la parure de cet homme caché du cœur ? En un esprit doux et paisible. Mais comme cette douceur, cette paix sont des fruits de l'Esprit de Dieu, qu'ils sont par conséquent permanents, impérissables, et forment le contraste le plus absolu avec la parure extérieure, qui est la vanité et le néant même, l'apôtre les caractérise par ce mot frappant : La parure incorruptible (ou, comme d'autres traduisent : l'incorruptibilité) d'un esprit doux et paisible.

Cette parure-là, qui est d'un grand prix devant Dieu, ne peut jamais ni se corrompre ni périr. Entre ces deux sortes de parures, quelle est la femme chrétienne qui puisse hésiter ?
