1 à 13 Transfert de l'arche.

Les Anciens d'Israël : les présidents et les notables de chaque commune ; les chefs des tribus : les princes de chaque tribu, comprenant les princes des familles, littéralement : les princes des pères, c'est-à-dire les chefs des branches principales de chaque tribu (Deutéronome 5.23).

Pour faire monter de la cité de David... Il s'agissait d'installer dans le nouveau temple l'arche qui avait été provisoirement déposée par David dans un tabernacle établi près de sa propre demeure en Sion (2Samuel 6.12). L'expression de faire monter confirme ce que nous avons dit de la situation de la cité de David relativement à l'emplacement du temple ; elle s'expliquerait difficilement si le palais de David avait été situé sur la colline occidentale, plus élevée que celle de Morija (voir figure).

La mise en place de l'arche fut le couronnement de tout le travail de construction du temple : ce fut une cérémonie d'une grande solennité. L'arche fut déposée à l'endroit prévu, au sein même du bâtiment, là où l'on s'attendait à ce que Dieu parle à Israël, dans le lieu très saint. Les barres de l'arche furent retirées, afin que le souverain sacrificateur, une fois par an, puisse se diriger en ce lieu, sous les ailes des chérubins, pour y faire l'aspersion du sang ; ces barres étaient ainsi toujours disponibles, bien qu'il n'y ait maintenant plus lieu de les utiliser.

La gloire de Dieu apparaissant dans la nuée peut souligner : - L'obscurité qui régnait en cette dispensation ou durant cette période, comparée à la Lumière qui luit aujourd'hui, celle de l'évangile, par laquelle, à visage découvert, nous voyons, comme dans un miroir, la Gloire du Seigneur, 2Corinthiens 3:18*. - L'obscurité de notre état actuel, comparé à ce que nous serons, plus tard, en compagnie de Christ, là où sera le bonheur céleste, où la Gloire divine sera totalement dévoilée !
