Un champion, littéralement l'homme des deux intervalles entre les deux armées ; celui qui s'avance hors des rangs pour livrer un combat singulier qui doit décider de la victoire.

Goliath : l'éclatant.

De Gath : descendant des Anakim (Josué 11.21-22).

Six coudées et un empan, ou six coudées et demie, environ trois mètres et six centimètres, taille qui a été presque atteinte par quelques géants, même dans les temps modernes. En Inde, au pied de l'Himalaya, on a trouvé en 1838 un squelette de près de trois mètres, et en 1879 on montrait à Berlin un géant chinois de 279 centimètres de hauteur (Daheim, 1879).
