Une fois enlevés et remplacés par d'autres, les pains de proposition ne devaient être mangés que par des sacrificateurs (Lévitique 24.9). Ahimélec fait primer la loi de la charité sur la prescription cérémoniale, et cet exemple est cité avec approbation par Jésus (Matthieu 12.1 et suivants). Toutefois il commence par s'assurer que les compagnons de David possèdent. au moins la première condition de la pureté légale (Exode 19.15).
