Paul a dans la pensée cette trinité de grâces évangéliques, la foi, l'amour, l'espérance, qu'il considère partout comme les éléments essentiels de la vie chrétienne. (1Corinthiens 13.13 ; Colossiens 1.4,5 ; 1Thessaloniciens 5.8 ; comparez Hébreux 6.10-12)

Mais, au lieu de nommer simplement ces grâces, il accompagne chacune d'elles d'une épithète qui en exprime la réalité pratique.

L'œuvre de votre foi est une foi qui ne consiste point seulement en opinion ou en parole, mais qui est opérante et active, riche en bonnes œuvres. (L'interprétation de Calvin, qui voit dans ces mots l'œuvre du Saint-Esprit opérant la foi dans les cœurs, détruit l'harmonie du contexte.)

Le travail de votre charité indique un amour qui n'est pas tout sentiment, émotion, contemplation, mais qui est dévoué et qui se donne aux autres par l'action, le sacrifice, la peine.

La constance (Grec : "patience") de votre espérance en JésusChrist, est une espérance qui persiste au milieu de tous les combats, de toutes les épreuves, qui reste inébranlable dans son attente du retour de Jésus-Christ pour le triomphe et la perfection de son règne.

Ainsi Paul, en ces termes : œuvre, travail, patience, placés avant le nom de chacune des grâces qu'il énumère, a voulu indiquer avec précision et énergie comment la foi, la charité, l'espérance doivent se prouver à nous-mêmes et aux autres.

- C'est là ce que l'apôtre se rappelle sans cesse devant Dieu, c'est-à-dire dans ses actions de grâces et ses prières. (verset 2)
