Nous n'avons pas recherché la gloire qui vient des hommes, ni de vous ni des autres. Nous aurions pu nous imposer en tant qu’apôtres de Christ,

Grec : "Ayant le pouvoir d'être en poids," comme apôtre de Christ.

Ce mot peut signifier être à charge à l'Église, qui a le devoir de pourvoir à la subsistance des serviteurs de Dieu. (Luc 10.7 ; 1Corinthiens 9.3-14 ; 1Timothée 5.17,18)

Plusieurs interprètes adoptent ce sens à cause de verset 9, où se trouve le verbe être à charge, dérivé du même mot. Mais cette expression signifie aussi (comme notre tournure française avoir du poids) être en honneur, en autorité. Ce dernier sens est préférable à cause du contexte immédiat : Paul n'a point cherché la gloire qui vient des hommes, et, bien qu'il eût eu le pouvoir d'user d'autorité, parce qu'il était apôtre de Christ, il a préféré "être doux comme une nourrice qui prend un tendre soin de ses enfants." (verset 7)

Ainsi, l'idée d'autorité s'accorde fort bien avec les paroles qui précèdent et l'image qui suit, tandis que le droit de recevoir son entretien est une pensée étrangère à l'ensemble. Paul ne la présente qu'à verset 9.
