17 à 25 Directions sur la manière de traiter les anciens.

L'apôtre a exposé ci-dessus longuement les qualités requises des anciens ou évêques. (1Timothée 3.1 et suivants) Il n'y revient pas ici ; mais il donne quelques conseils encore sur la manière dont les Eglises doivent les honorer et pourvoir à leurs besoins. Ce sujet se présentait tout naturellement à son esprit après ce qu'il venait de dire des veuves qui remplissaient, pour leur sexe, des offices analogues à ceux des anciens. (1Timothée 5.9, note.)

Ces paroles nous montrent trois sortes de fonctions confiées aux anciens : présider, par où il faut entendre, soit la direction des assemblées, soit le gouvernement de l'Eglise en général ; édifier l'Eglise par la parole, c'est-à-dire par les exhortations, l'exercice du don de prophétie, etc., enfin, l'instruire par l'enseignement proprement dit. (Ces deux dernières fonctions sont aussi distinctes d'après d'autres passages, comme Romains 12.7,8)

On voit de plus ici que ces divers emplois se trouvaient tantôt réunis dans les mêmes personnes, tantôt séparés : ce qui était tout naturel dans ces premiers temps où les Eglises, se recrutant surtout parmi les classes inférieures de la société, ne comptaient pas toujours dans leur sein des fidèles qui eussent les dons nécessaires à la prédication ou à l'enseignement. Un jugement sain, éclairé et sanctifié par l'Evangile pouvait d'ailleurs suffire pour le gouvernement de l'Eglise, en des hommes du reste peu instruits.

- Quoi qu'il en soit, l'apôtre demande avec instance que les Eglises apprennent à estimer la fidélité dans l'emploi de tous ces dons, surtout là où ils se trouvaient réunis dans les mêmes anciens.

Mais qu'est-ce que ce double honneur qui est requis pour eux ? Plusieurs interprètes, s'arrêtant uniquement au sens du verset suivant, (1Timothée 5.18) ont traduit ces mots par un double salaire ou honoraire. (Ainsi la version de Lausanne.)

Sans doute ce sens était dans la pensée de l'apôtre, et le mot original peut être rendu ainsi ; il était naturel que des hommes qui donnaient tout leur temps au soin des troupeaux en fussent dédommagés, tandis que d'autres anciens, restant dans leur vocation temporelle, avaient moins besoin d'être soutenus par l'Eglise. Mais il faut conserver aussi à ces paroles leur sens moral d'estime et de respect, qui n'avait certainement pas moins d'importance aux yeux de l'apôtre. (Comparer 1Timothée 5.3, note)

On doit veiller particulièrement à la rémunération des serviteurs de Dieu. Ceux qui se donnent de tout cœur dans ce ministère sont dignes d'un double honneur et d'une haute estime. C'est leur juste rétribution, le salaire de leur travail.

L'apôtre Paul recommande à Timothée de veiller solennellement contre toute partialité dans l’exercice de son ministère. Nous avons grand besoin de veiller, en tout temps, afin de ne pas nous mêler à ceux qui pratiquent ouvertement le péché. On pourrait ainsi paraphraser les propos de l’apôtre : « garde toi dans la pureté, garde toi non seulement d’imiter le monde, mais aussi d’approuver ceux qui pratiquent ses vanités, ou qui incitent les autres à s'y engager ».

L'apôtre recommande aussi à Timothée de prendre soin de sa santé. Notre corps ne doit pas être notre maître, ni notre esclave, mais nous devons l’utiliser en vue de le rendre utile au service de Dieu.

Il y a des péchés secrets, alors que d'autres s'affichent au grand jour : certains sont manifestes et n'attendent pas le Jour du Jugement, alors que d’autres ne seront découverts que plus tard. Dieu amènera à la lumière tout ce qui est caché dans les ténèbres, et fera connaître les pensées de tous.

Attendons avec impatience le Jour du Jugement, occupons nous à pratiquer correctement nos tâches, qu’il s’agisse des plus importantes comme des moindres, faisons tout pour que le Nom et la doctrine de Dieu ne puissent jamais être ternis par notre conduite !
