1 Timothée 1.18

C’est ce message que je te mets à cœur de proclamer, ô Timothée, mon cher enfant. Je t’en confie la charge, conformément aux indications prophétiques dont tu as été l’objet. Ce sont elles qui m’ont dirigé vers toi et qui t’ont montré la voie que tu devais suivre. À toi d’accomplir ces prophéties en t’appuyant sur elles. Que leur souvenir t’encourage à continuer la lutte. Mène le bon combat.

Il paraît qu'il y avait eu, dans les Eglises d'Asie, des chrétiens doués du don de prophétie, qui avaient annoncé par le SaintEsprit que Timothée deviendrait un serviteur de Dieu distingué. C'est là ce que rappelle l'apôtre, ici et ailleurs. (1Timothée 4.14 ; 6.12)

Grec : "Que tu fasses en (ou : par) elles la bonne guerre," dans ces prophéties ; ce qui peut vouloir dire : que tu combattes de manière à accomplir ce qu'elles annonçaient ; ou bien : que tu combattes avec le courage qu'elles t'inspireront.

- C'est par cette recommandation que l'apôtre revient à sa pensée de 1Timothée 1.3. (Comparer 1Timothée 1.5, note.)

L’exercice de la piété est un véritable combat contre le péché et contre Satan, combat conduit par le Seigneur Jésus, le « Maître d’œuvre » de notre salut.

Toute la confiance que notre entourage a fondée sur nous devrait nous inciter à persévérer dans l’exercice du devoir. Ayons une conduite pleine de droiture, en tous points !

Une des préventions et des plus importantes censures dans l'église primitive consistait à prévenir au mieux le péché, et à corriger le pécheur engagé sur une fausse route.

Puissent tous ceux qui sont tentés de s’écarter du chemin de la piété et des préceptes de l'Évangile, se souvenir qu’une telle démarche ne peut conduire qu’au « naufrage » de la foi.
