World English Bible For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

12 à 24 L'apôtre se justifie au sujet de son voyage différé à Corinthe.

C'est par ces mots que Paul commence cette apologie de son ministère, qui occupe une si grande partie de l'épître, et que les fausses accusations de ses adversaires rendaient indispensable. Il la rattache (car) à cette communion de prières qui remplit son cœur. (verset 11)

Il avait promis aux Corinthiens de les visiter, afin de combattre par sa présence les nombreux abus qui s'étaient introduits dans leur Eglise. Il n'avait point encore jusqu'ici rempli cette promesse, parce que, au milieu de ses combats et de ses souffrances, il redoutait de paraître dans une Eglise qui lui était si chère avec toute la sévérité de son autorité apostolique. (2Corinthiens 1.23 ; 1Corinthiens 4.21 ; 2Corinthiens 13.10)

Ses adversaires, loin d'être humiliés par sa première lettre, s'étaient saisis de cette circonstance pour l'accuser de versatilité (verset 17) et de crainte des hommes. (2Corinthiens 10.1-10) Ce sont ces reproches qu'il doit repousser pour l'honneur et l'efficacité de son ministère.

- Il proteste donc en invoquant le témoignage de sa conscience qui est son sujet de gloire, qu'il s'est conduit dans le monde, c'est-à-dire aux yeux de tous, en simplicité (d'autres lisent en sainteté) et en sincérité de Dieu, c'est-à-dire en sincérité qui vient de Dieu et qui lui est agréable.

Pour comprendre toute la force du terme que nous traduisons par sincérité, il faut remonter à son étymologie : il se compose des deux mots soleil et jugement et signifie : la qualité d'un objet transparent dont on juge aux rayons du soleil ; ainsi, la pureté sans tache d'un cristal, et, au moral, la limpidité d'une âme que la lumière de l'Esprit de Dieu pénètre tout entière, et qui se juge par là.

Ce substantif composé se retrouve 2Corinthiens 2.17 ; 1Corinthiens 5.8 L'adjectif formé des mêmes racines se lit, Philippiens 1.10 ; 2Pierre 3.1.

- Il faut remarquer encore ici le profond contraste que l'apôtre établit entre la sagesse charnelle, c'est-à-dire l'habileté de la raison humaine livrée à elle-même, à ses moyens équivoques, et la grâce de Dieu, qui éclaire l'intelligence, purifie le cœur et sanctifie tous les motifs.

Étant pécheur, l'apôtre Paul n'aurait pu se glorifier qu’en Christ seulement, mais d’autre part étant en plus croyant, il peut se réjouir et Lui rendre gloire, étant réellement en accord avec ce qu'il professait.

Notre conscience nous témoigne de l’état du déroulement de notre vie. De ce fait nous ne pouvons nous juger nous-mêmes sur un seul acte. Nous tiendrons d’excellents témoignages, si nous vivons et agissons avec de tels principes, basés sur la Grâce, agissant dans le cœur. Grâce à cette dernière, nous pouvons laisser tout ce qui caractérise notre personnalité entre les mains du Seigneur, en utilisant tous les moyens pour « l'affiner », lorsque les ordonnances de l’Évangile, nous y appellent ponctuellement.
