C'est là une seconde catégorie de péchés qui avaient déjà causé à l'apôtre de vrais tourments d'esprit, (1Corinthiens 5) et qui avaient valu à la ville de Corinthe une triste célébrité.

Paul se garde bien d'en accuser tous les membres de l'Eglise, il parle de plusieurs qui, ayant péché auparavant, soit avant, soit depuis leur conversion, ou bien avant la première épître, ne s'étaient point repentis, ni sérieusement convertis.

L'apôtre le craint, du moins, et cette crainte suffit pour qu'il pressente une profonde humiliation que son Dieu lui infligera. (Selon la vraie leçon, le verbe est au futur, non au subjonctif, preuve qu'il tient la chose pour probable.) Et dans ce cas, il sera dans le deuil, il aura à pleurer sur ces pécheurs qui se perdent.

Quelle éloquence dans ce saint amour des âmes ! et à quelle hauteur le grand apôtre s'élève au-dessus des pensées de ceux qui s'imaginaient qu'il n'avait qu'à se justifier devant eux ! (verset 19)
