2 Corinthiens 3.6

C’est lui qui nous a rendus capables d’être les serviteurs d’une alliance nouvelle. Cette alliance ne dépend pas de la loi écrite, mais de l’Esprit Saint. La loi écrite donne la mort, mais l’Esprit Saint donne la vie.

Ces termes : lettre, esprit, ne dépendent pas de nouvelle alliance, comme s'ils devaient la caractériser, mais du mot ministres (serviteurs). Ainsi : "Dieu nous a rendus capables d'être les serviteurs, non de lettre, mais d'esprit." (Traduct. littér. ; voir la note suivante.)

Il est peu de passages dont on ait aussi souvent abusé que de celui-ci, en le détournant de son vrai sens. De quoi s'agit-il, en effet ? est-ce que l'apôtre entend ici par la lettre ce qui est écrit, en opposition à l'esprit ?

Pas le moins du monde ; il n'y a, pour s'en convaincre, qu'à lire les versets suivants. L'apôtre, afin de relever l'excellence du ministère de la nouvelle alliance, le met en parallèle avec le ministère de l'ancienne alliance. Il voit dans l'un surtout la lettre, la forme, la loi ; dans l'autre surtout l'Esprit qui y domine, l'Esprit de la Pentecôte, répandu sur l'Eglise à la fête même de la législation du Sinaï.

Il ne faut pas même, avec Calvin et d'autres, entendre par la lettre l'ancienne alliance comme telle, et par l'esprit, l'Evangile ; mais le caractère dominant de l'un et de l'autre, leur ministère respectif. Rien ne pouvait mieux exprimer ce caractère que cette sentence énergique : la lettre tue, l'esprit vivifie.

Les deux derniers mots n'ont pas besoin d'explication ; tout le Nouveau Testament attribue à l'Esprit de Dieu la création de la vie dans les âmes et dans l'Eglise.

Quant aux premiers, ils ne signifient pas seulement que le caractère de servilité est inhérent à l'ancienne alliance, ou que la loi elle-même laisse les âmes sans vie, puisqu'elle ne fait qu'ordonner et accuser ; non, il faut conserver au verbe son sens actif et complet : la loi tue ; mais nous savons que c'est pour vivifier tous ceux qui se repentent.

De là ces expressions qui suivent : ministère de la mort, (verset 7) ministère de la condamnation. (verset 9) Paul lui-même nous a donné le vrai commentaire de ces paroles dans Romains 7.9 et suivants, qu'il faut consulter ici.

- Tel est bien, d'après le contexte, le premier sens de cette remarquable sentence. Mais il est certain que tout retour à la servitude de la loi, tout esclavage des traditions humaines et de certaines formules peut ramener, même sous l'Evangile, l'empire de la lettre qui tue. Ce n'est donc pas ce qui est écrit qui constitue la lettre, mais tout ce qui éteint l'Esprit.

"Quand Paul écrivait ces paroles, il remplissait non le ministère de la lettre, mais celui de l'Esprit. Et Moïse, dans l'office qui lui était propre, alors même qu'il n'aurait rien écrit, ne se serait pourtant pas élevé au-dessus de la lettre." Bengel.
