"Saint Paul rappelle ici le commencement de la création, les ténèbres et la lumière, et il montre que cette nouvelle œuvre de Dieu est plus grande que la première. Alors, il dit : "Que la lumière soit, et la lumière fut ;" maintenant, il n'a pas dit seulement, il est devenu lui-même la lumière. Aussi, ne voyons-nous pas seulement les choses du dehors par cette lumière, mais nous voyons Dieu lui-même en Jésus-Christ." Chrysostôme.

La création visible est ici, comme toujours, une image de la création morale. (2Corinthiens 5.17 ; Romains 4.17 ; Ephésiens 2.10) Toujours aussi cette illumination intérieure de ceux qui reçoivent la lumière a pour but qu'ils la répandent à leur tour au sein des ténèbres de ce monde. (Philippiens 2.15) Ils ne le peuvent qu'en amenant les hommes à Jésus-Christ, en la face duquel resplendit cette gloire bien autrement que sur le visage de Moïse. (2Corinthiens 3.7 et suivants)
