2 Corinthiens 7.1

Toutes ces promesses sont valables pour nous, mes chers amis. C’est pourquoi, purifions-nous de tout ce qui salit le corps ou l’âme et efforçons-nous d’être parfaitement saints en vivant dans le respect de Dieu.
Mes amis, puisque nous possédons ce qui nous a été promis en ces termes, *purifions-nous de tout ce qui corrompt le corps et l’esprit, pour mener ainsi une vie pleinement sainte en révérant Dieu.

Chapitre 7.

Ces promesses dont parle l'apôtre sont celles qu'il a citées. (2Corinthiens 6.16-18) Ces mêmes chrétiens qu'il a appelés "lumière, justice, temple de Dieu," (2Corinthiens 6.14-16) il les exhorte à se purifier de leurs souillures !

Par là il nous montre, d'une part, que le combat dure autant que cette vie d'épreuve ; et, d'un autre côté, que l'assurance du salut, fondée sur la justification par la foi, est inséparable d'une sanctification toujours progressive.

- Les souillures de la chair et de l'esprit sont en général celles du dehors et celles du dedans. Ces paroles condamnent également une orgueilleuse spiritualité, qui méprise les précautions dans les choses extérieures, et le pharisaïsme, qui, tout occupé de ce qui frappe les regards, se met peu en peine des péchés du cœur.

Les promesses de Dieu sont utiles pour nous inciter à croître dans la sainteté ; nous devons nous purifier nous-mêmes de toute souillure de chair et d'esprit.

Si nous basons notre espérance en Dieu le Père, nous devons rechercher la sainteté et la perfection, à l'image de ce Dernier, dans les cieux. Sa Grâce, par l'influence de l'Esprit, peut déjà nous purifier, à elle seule, mais la recherche de la sainteté doit être l'objet constant de nos prières. Si les serviteurs de Dieu sont méprisés, il est aussi à craindre que l'Évangile lui-même le soit également ; bien que ces derniers ne doivent flatter personne, ils doivent cependant exprimer de la douceur envers tous. Ils peuvent rechercher l'estime et la faveur de ceux qu’ils côtoient, mais ils ne doivent corrompre qui que ce soit par de fausses doctrines, voire des paroles flatteuses ; ils ne doivent nuire à personne, ni chercher à promouvoir leur propre intérêt, afin de ne blesser qui que ce soit.

Paul, en raison de son affection envers les Corinthiens, leur parlait librement ; il était heureux de vanter la croissance spirituelle qu’il leur avait permis d’acquérir, en tous lieux et en toutes occasions !
