David ne juge pas nécessaire de se livrer à une enquête plus approfondie sur la véracité du jeune homme. Il suffit qu'il se soit attribué, lui étranger, l'accomplissement d'un acte devant lequel avaient maintes fois reculé l'écuyer de Saül et David lui-même, pour qu'il porte la responsabilité de cet acte. David agit ici en souverain d'Israël ; il l'est en effet depuis la mort de Saül.
