La promesse se rapporte avant tout à l'élévation du fils sur le trône de son père, comme le prouvent le verset 13 et les paroles parallèles de 1Chroniques 28.5-6 ; mais en même temps il est manifeste que, dans la personne de Salomon, est comprise sa descendance tout entière, car les versets 14 à 16 n'ont de sens qu'en admettant l'extension de cette promesse à toute la race de David.

J'élèverai : sur ton trône.

Celui qui sortira. Ces mots n'impliquent pas nécessairement qu'au moment où Nathan parlait, Salomon ne fût pas encore né ; car on peut traduire : Celui qui sera sorti. L'idée sur laquelle cette expression appuie, est en tout cas celle-ci : ton propre fils, ta chair et ton sang. Le règne reste tien en la personne de ton fils.
