Chapitre 3.

1 à 9 Les derniers jours mauvais et ce que les hommes seront alors.

Dans le langage prophétique du Nouveau Testament, les derniers jours sont ceux qui précéderont le retour de Christ, et ils doivent être mauvais. (1Timothée 4.1 et suivants ; 2Thessaloniciens 2.1 et suivants ; comparez Matthieu 24.11,12)

L'apôtre n'entend point cependant que chaque trait du sombre tableau moral qu'il va tracer soit applicable à tous les hommes ; Dieu a toujours son peuple sur la terre. Mais tous ces vices et ces péchés se sont vus à certaines époques, et se retrouveront encore parmi les hommes, et même il n'en est aucun que l'on ne puisse observer dans chaque génération. Seulement, le torrent du mal peut couler plus ou moins abondant. (Comparer Romains 1.30,31)

L'apôtre prédit la venue d'ennemis dangereux, hostiles à l'Évangile. (2 Timothée 3:1-9) Il propose à Timothée de suivre son propre exemple. (2 Timothée 3:10-13) Il l'exhorte à continuer dans la doctrine qu'il a apprise des Saintes Écritures. (2 Timothée 3:14-17)

2 Timothée 3:1-9 Même au temps de l'Évangile il y aura des périodes fâcheuses, d’une part à cause de la persécution, mais d’autre part à cause des corruptions internes à l’église.

Les hommes aiment satisfaire leurs propres convoitises, plutôt que vouloir plaire à Dieu et accomplir leur devoir. Quand un individu est passionné par l’obtention de sa convoitise, tout en étant inquiet de garder ce qu'il possède déjà, il devient dangereux vis-à-vis de son prochain. Quand les hommes ne craignent pas Dieu, ils n’ont alors aucune considération pour les autres. Quand les enfants désobéissent à leurs parents, les temps deviennent fâcheux. Les impies ne craignent pas Dieu, parce qu'ils méprisent Sa Miséricorde.

Nous abusons des dons que Dieu nous a octroyés, si nous en profitons, de façon exagérée. Les temps sont également difficiles lorsque les parents n'éprouvent plus d’affection naturelle envers leurs enfants. Il en est de même quand certaines personnes n’ont plus aucune règle pour contrôler leur esprit, en méprisant la bonté et ce qui est honorable.

Dieu doit être aimé par dessus tout ; un esprit charnel, rempli d'inimitié contre Lui, place ses priorités dans d’autres domaines, en particulier dans les plaisirs et la luxure. La dévotion est vraiment à l’opposé d’une telle conduite ; les véritables chrétiens doivent s'écarter des hypocrites. De telles personnes se sont infiltrées dans l'église, en tous lieux, de tous temps.

Il y a toujours eu des personnes sournoises, qui, par des vains discours et des flatteries de tout genre, ont acquis la faveur et la confiance de certains, naïfs et versatiles.

Tout doit concourir à la connaissance du Seigneur ; ceux qui suivent systématiquement toute nouvelle doctrine, ne cherchent cependant jamais la Vérité, telle qu'elle nous est donnée par Jésus. Les magiciens Égyptiens (d’après le livre de la Genèse) étaient des hommes à l’esprit corrompu, envahis de préjugés contre la Vérité, et n’ayant aucune foi.

De telles erreurs ne peuvent cependant durer infiniment : Satan peut tromper les nations et les églises, mais pas cependant davantage, ni plus longtemps, que Dieu ne le permettra !

      1 But the Spirit says expressly that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,
      2 through the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron;
      3 forbidding marriage and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
