Hérode était juif, il devait donc savoir combien était coupable cet orgueil dont il s'enivrait. Et quand le peuple aveuglé lui rendit publiquement des honneurs divins il aurait dû les repousser comme une idolâtrie et un sacrilège. Il ne le fit pas, et un châtiment terrible manifesta la Justice de Dieu sur celui qui, en outre, avait sur sa conscience le meurtre d'un apôtre du Seigneur.

La maladie mortelle dont il fut atteint est attribuée à l'action d'un ange qui le frappa, (comparez 2Samuel 24.17 ; 2Rois 19.35) mais cette expression n'implique pas nécessairement que l'ange apparut aux spectateurs.

Luc indique lui même la cause de la mort d'Hérode dans l'affreuse maladie dont il fut atteint : rongé des vers. Il mourut comme Antiochus Epiphane. ( /RAPC 2Ma 9 :5,9.)

Josèphe (Ant. XIX 8, 2) raconte longuement la mort d'Hérode. Son récit diffère, en quelques détails, d'avec celui de Luc mais, dans le fond, les deux écrivains sont d'accord.

L'historien juif place la scène en plein théâtre, où l'on célébrait des jeux en l'honneur de l'empereur en présence d'une foule immense. Hérode parut, couvert d'un manteau royal dont les broderies d'argent étincelaient aux rayons du soleil.

Lorsque le peuple lui rend les honneurs divins Josèphe, indigné, fait lui-même cette réflexion : "Le roi ne les reprit point et il ne repoussa pas loin de lui cette impie adulation."

Selon cet historien, Hérode, à l'instant même, se sentit atteint d'une maladie mystérieuse qui lui déchirait les entrailles, et il fut emporté dans son palais, où il mourut quelques jours après.)
