Ce dernier mot montre clairement comment il faut entendre tout ce qui précède au sujet d'Apollon.

Il en était au point où le baptême de Jean, c'est à dire tout son ministère avait conduit les âmes : la repentance, le profond besoin d'une rédemption et la conviction que Jésus était le Messie, "l'Agneau de Dieu qui ôte le péché du monde."

Chez un homme fervent d'esprit, doué d'une vive intelligence et d'une âme ardente (l'esprit n'est pas ici le Saint-Esprit), comme l'était Apollos, cette connaissance, si incomplète fut-elle, n'était pas sans porter du fruit dans sa vie, elle le mettait à même d'être une lumière pour les autres.

Aussi Luc peut-il dire qu'il avait été instruit dans la voie du Seigneur (D ajoute : dans sa patrie, en Egypte) et qu'il était capable d'enseigner exactement ce qui regardait Jésus, le Messie, le Sauveur d'Israël.

Ce qui lui manquait, c'était le baptême du SaintEsprit, exactement comme à ces autres disciples de Jean dont il est parlé à Actes 19.1 et suivants

Il y a, en pleine chrétienté, beaucoup d'âmes qui en sont pratiquement au même point, qui savent que Jésus est le Sauveur, mais ne sont jamais encore parvenues jusqu'à la Pentecôte de l'Esprit.

- La voie du Seigneur, et, au verset suivant, la voie de Dieu, signifie, non seulement la doctrine, mais la direction de la vie qui tend vers Dieu, qui conduit à lui. (Comparer Actes 9.2 ; 19.9,23 ; 22.4 ; etc.)

D'après le texte reçu, Apollos enseignait ce qui regardait le Seigneur, au lieu de Jésus. (Comparer V 28.)
