Au lieu de il était tout entier à la Parole (grec étreint par la Parole), le texte reçu, avec quelques majuscules récents, porte : étreint par l'Esprit.

Cette indication est opposée à celle de versets 3,4, qui nous montrait Paul travaillant à son métier avec Aquilas et Priscille et ne prêchant l'Evangile que les jours de sabbat.

Dès ce moment, il se voua tout entier à son activité missionnaire. Par l'arrivée de ses compagnons d'œuvre, qu'il avait laissés en Macédoine, il fut déchargé sans doute du soin de pourvoir à son entretien. (Actes 17.14,15)

Les bonnes nouvelles qu'ils lui apportaient de l'Eglise de Thessalonique le remplirent de joie et l'engagèrent à prolonger son séjour à Corinthe. (1Thessaloniciens 3.4-8)

- Il ressort de Actes 17.15, comparez 1Thessaloniciens 3.1,2, que Silas et Timothée rejoignirent Paul à Athènes déjà.

Le récit de Luc présente une lacune : il ne mentionne pas cette première réunion de l'apôtre avec ses collaborateurs et laisserait croire que ceux-ci, malgré l'invitation pressante qui leur était adressée, (Actes 17.15) ne se rendirent auprès de Paul qu'après son départ d'Athènes pour Corinthe.

Mais l'indication de 1Thessaloniciens 3.1,2, nous oblige à admettre que Timothée en tous cas et probablement aussi Silas vinrent trouver Paul à Athènes.

L'apôtre les renvoya de nouveau en Macédoine, Timothée à Thessalonique et Silas peut-être à Philippes, (Philippiens 4.15) et de là, ils le rejoignirent à Corinthe, où il s'était rendu entre temps. M. Ramsay estime, d'après ces allées et venues, que Paul passa trois à quatre semaines à Athènes et qu'il fut cinq ou six semaines à attendre ses amis à Corinthe.
