Ces disciples n'avaient reçu que le baptême de Jean, (verset 4) c'està-dire qu'ils étaient disciples, moins de Jésus, que de Jean Baptiste. Leur développement religieux était au même point que celui d'Apollos. (Actes 18.25, note.)

Paul, les ayant trouvés, rencontrés, s'aperçut bien vite de ce qui manquait à leur connaissance et à leur loi. De là sa question. Elle suppose que quand on a cru, on a aussi reçu le Saint-Esprit ; l'apôtre s'étonne de n'en pas trouver les effets dans leurs entretiens.

- La réponse de ces disciples ne signifie pas qu'ils ignorassent même l'existence du Saint-Esprit ; ils auraient été dans ce cas, très mal instruits de la prédication de Jean-Baptiste. (Matthieu 3.11 ; Jean 1.32-34)

Ils veulent dire plutôt qu'ils ne savent pas si le Saint-Esprit a déjà été donné, s'il est au sein de l'humanité dans cette condition nouvelle qui suppose le retour de Jésus dans la gloire, (comparez Jean 7.39, note) si le croyant peut le recevoir d'une manière permanente, être éclairé, vivifié, sanctifié par lui, et obtenir aussi par son action des dons extraordinaires. ils vont eux-mêmes en faire l'expérience. (verset 6)
