World English Bible Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome."

Paul se proposa, forma le projet.

Telle est la signification des mots grecs : il se mit dans l'esprit, et non il se proposa par l'Esprit (de Dieu), comme ont traduit quelques interprètes.

- Voyant qu'après trois ans de travail à Ephèse son œuvre y était finie, l'apôtre résolut d'aller à Jérusalem, afin d'y porter la collecte qu'il avait provoquée en Grèce, en faveur des frères pauvres de la Judée. (1Corinthiens 16.1-4 ; Romains 15.25-28)

Mais auparavant il voulait visiter une dernière fois les Eglises de la Macédoine et de l'Achaïe, spécialement Corinthe. (1Corinthiens 16.5)

Enfin il envisage dès ce moment le but suprême de son apostolat, Rome. Il est convaincu que c'est son devoir et la volonté de Dieu à son égard : Il me faut voir Rome. (Comparer Actes 23.11 ; Romains 1.10 ; 15.23)

Mais il parviendra à Rome bien plus tard et d'une tout autre manière qu'il ne le pensait alors. (Actes 27 et Actes 28)

Les personnes qui venaient de loin, pour offrir leur dévotion au temple d'Éphèse, achetaient, à titre de souvenir, de menus objets d’argent, ou des représentations miniatures de ce temple.

Nous pouvons ainsi voir comment certains artisans tiraient profit de la superstition du peuple, pour satisfaire leurs intérêts. Les hommes veillent jalousement sur ce qui leur procure des richesses ; beaucoup s’opposent à l'Évangile, parce qu'Il appelle les hommes à refuser toute activité illicite, de type souvent très lucratif...

Certaines personnes commercialisent les objets les plus absurdes, grossiers et inutiles, comme par exemple ces « dieux faits de main d'homme », récoltant par là de gros bénéfices.

La ville d’Éphèse était en pleine de confusion, conséquence classique de son attachement pour la fausse religion. Le zèle pour l'honneur de Christ et l'amour des frères, encourage les croyants fervents à courir des risques pour la cause du Seigneur. Des amis pourront être d’ailleurs souvent découverts parmi ceux qui sont étrangers à la véritable religion, mais qui ont cependant observé une certaine droiture vis-à-vis des chrétiens.

      4 These accompanied him as far as Asia: Sopater of Beroea; Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians; Gaius of Derbe; Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia.
      5 But these had gone ahead, and were waiting for us at Troas.
      6 We sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and came to them at Troas in five days, where we stayed seven days.
      16 For Paul had determined to sail past Ephesus, that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening, if it were possible for him, to be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost.
      22 Now, behold, I go bound by the Spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there;

      4 Having found disciples, we stayed there seven days. These said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.

      17 When we had come to Jerusalem, the brothers received us gladly.

      12 Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, "You have appealed to Caesar. To Caesar you shall go."

      1 When it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan band.
      24 saying, 'Don't be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.'

      16 When we entered into Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard, but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him.
