Les chrétiens de la métropole juive, Jacques à leur tête, savaient donc se réjouir et glorifier Dieu des progrès de l'Evangile parmi les païens, par le ministère (grec service) de Paul. Ce fait jette une lumière favorable sur la proposition qu'ils vont lui faire et qui a été souvent mal comprise.

Le mot de myriade, littéralement dix mille, paraît une hyperbole. Mais Jacques pensait non seulement aux Juifs devenus chrétiens de la Judée, mais aux milliers qui se trouvaient alors à Jérusalem pour la fête de Pentecôte.

Du reste dans le langage ordinaire ce terme était employé pour dire une grande multitude. (Luc 12.1)

Tous ces Juifs, nés en Judée, étaient zélateurs de la loi (Galates 1.14) et en pratiquaient encore les rites avec dévotion. Cette circonstance motive la proposition de Jacques à l'apôtre Paul.
