Afin de convaincre Ananias, le Seigneur lui dévoile la grande vocation du future apôtre ; il lui en présente le double caractère : l'activité qu'il déploiera et les souffrances qu'il endurera pour le nom de Jésus.

Grec : il m'est un vase d'élection, c'est-à-dire un instrument choisi pour mon service et destiné à porter mon nom, en premier lieu devant les nations, c'est-à-dire les païens ; telle sera la principale vocation de Paul, et ce n'est qu'en seconde ligne qu'il portera le nom de Jésus devant les rois (Hérode Agrippa, Actes 26, Néron) et devant les fils d'Israël.

- Une telle mission entraînera de grandes souffrances.

Je lui montrerai, dit le Seigneur, soit par des révélations (de Wette, Ebrard, Wendt), soit plutôt dans le cours de sa vie même (Meyer, Holtzmann), tout ce qu'il faut qu'il souffre pour mon nom.

Cette prophétie, qui s'est abondamment accomplie dans la vie de Paul (2Corinthiens 11 et 2Corinthiens 12), annonçait l'ardent amour que devait avoir pour Jésus celui qui jusqu'ici l'avait persécuté.

- Il faut remarquer le mot trois fois répété : ton nom, mon nom, (versets 14,15,16) ce nom de Jésus, qui est l'expression de tout son être.
