Il y a sans doute un rapprochement voulu par l'auteur dans le choix qu'il fait des deux expressions en ruines (verset 9) et sécheresse (verset 11), en hébreu châreb et chôreb. Le sens est celui-ci : L'état de ruine du sanctuaire attire la ruine sur vous et vos biens. Ce n'est pas ici une vengeance de la part de l'Eternel, mais en châtiant il a pour but de ramener Israël à la conscience de ce qui lui manque par la séparation d'avec son Dieu, et de détruire en lui la soif du bien-être matériel. Le temple rétabli, c'était le gage de l'habitation de Dieu, et par conséquent de la bénédiction, au milieu de son peuple.
