Parole céleste, toujours nécessaire pour dissiper la crainte qu'inspire à l'homme mortel et pécheur une manifestation du Dieu saint et juste, ou seulement du monde invisible. Comparer : Esaïe 6.5 ; Ezéchiel 1.28 ; Exode 33.20 ; Daniel 8.17,18 ; 10.7 ; Luc 1.12 ; 5.8.

Jean, qui avait reposé sur le sein de Jésus, ne peut toutefois supporter la vue du Fils de Dieu dans sa gloire : il faut que son Maître le rassure, qu'il pose sur lui cette main qui avait, ici-bas, rendu la vue aux aveugles, la santé aux malades, la vie aux morts. Toute la confiance de la foi, la plus intime communion de l'amour ne doivent jamais bannir de notre cœur "la crainte et le tremblement" l'humble adoration du Sauveur glorifié.

Titre pris par Jéhova lui-même, (Esaïe 44.6 ; 48.12) et que le fils de Dieu s'attribue ici. Le sens est le même que versets 4,8. C'est la pensée que Jésus est le premier et le dernier, qui doit rassurer son disciple.
