Chapitre 14.

1 à 5 L'agneau et les rachetés en Sion. Le cantique céleste.

On s'attendait à une description de la guerre que le dragon avec ses deux alliés va faire aux saints ; (Apocalypse 12.17 ; 13.7) au lieu de cela, un tableau réconfortant qui nous montre les élus rassemblés sous la conduite de leur chef, l'Agneau, sur la montagne de Sion.

L'Agneau, qui apparaissait dans Apocalypse 5.6 "comme immolé," se montre ici comme un roi au milieu de son peuple.

Les cent quarante-quatre mille représentent l'Église ; l'article, qui les désignerait comme une apparition connue, manque ; cependant il est difficile de ne pas les identifier avec ceux qui sont décrits à Apocalypse 7.3-8.

Mais tandis que là ils reçoivent le sceau de Dieu, qui les préservera au sein des épreuves qu'ils auront à traverser, ici ils se tiennent en repos autour de l'Agneau, sur la montagne de Sion, pendant que le dragon va déchaîner la guerre et que les jugements de Dieu s'exerceront sur le monde.

D'autres pensent que dans notre chapitre aussi les cent quarante-quatre mille ont encore "la grande tribulation" devant eux. Ils forment l'armée des saints qui, rangée autour de Christ se prépare à soutenir les assauts du dragon, (Apocalypse 13.7) et est encouragée au combat par le chant des anges. (verset 3 et suivants) Mais la montagne de Sion peut-elle être, dans la pensée de Jean, la Jérusalem terrestre, puisque c'est le temps où "la ville sainte est livrée aux nations qui la foulent aux pieds ?" (Apocalypse 11.2) Comparer aussi la note suivante.

Quoi qu'il en soit, au milieu des sombres peintures de l'humanité séduite et corrompue par le péché et des jugements qui vont fondre sur elle, cette échappée sur la paix et la sécurité dont jouissent les rachetés de Christ est consolante et encourageante.

L'âme, encore frémissante des blasphèmes et des persécutions que décrit et prédit le chapitre précédent, s'élève avec délices vers la montagne de Sion, où elle contemple l'Agneau et ses serviteurs. Ceux-ci ont son nom et le nom de son Père écrit sur leur front, signe qui les fait connaître comme des rachetés de Christ, des enfants de Dieu, et les met à l'abri du mal et de la destruction. (Apocalypse 7.3)

La montagne de Sion est « l'Église de l'Évangile ». Christ demeure avec Son église, Il la préserve, même au temps de l’épreuve. Sa présence procure la persévérance. Son peuple y demeure dans la paix spirituelle !

Ces cent quarante quatre mille personnes mentionnées dans ce texte, ont le nom de Dieu écrit sur leurs fronts ; elles font une profession totale et ouverte de leur foi en Dieu et en Christ, avec toute la conduite convenable que cela entend.

Dans les périodes les plus sombres de l’histoire, plusieurs personnes ont donné leur vie pour leur fidélité à l'Évangile de Christ et au soutient de sa véracité. Elles se sont gardées des pires abominations des partisans de l'antéchrist. Leur cœur était en accord avec la volonté divine ; elles ont été pardonnées EN Christ ; ce Dernier est glorifié en elles et elles en Lui !

Que cela puisse être notre vœu, notre effort, notre ambition : être trouvés en l’honorable compagnie des rachetés ! Ce texte mentionne ceux qui sont véritablement sanctifiés et justifiés ; aucun hypocrite ne peut imaginer être trouvé sans défaut devant Dieu...
