Les grâces précieuses que l'apôtre vient de demander à Dieu pour ses frères, comme les immenses bienfaits qu'il va rappeler, (versets 12-14) doivent embraser le cœur d'une vive reconnaissance pour ce Père dont le nom seul rappelle au chrétien tout ce qu'il trouve en lui.

Rendre de pauvres pécheurs capables d'avoir part à l'héritage des saints dans la lumière, c'est là l'œuvre du Dieu tout-puissant. Les termes de ce verset sont évidemment empruntés à l'A.T., qui nous représente Canaan comme l'héritage du peuple de Dieu. (Nombres 26.53-56 ; Josué 14.2 ; Psaumes 105.11 ; Hébreux 4.6-11 ; 1Pierre 1.4)

C'est un héritage dans lequel chacun des saints a sa part. Mais cet héritage est dans la lumière, c'est-à-dire en Dieu, qui est lui-même appelé lumière, parce que la lumière est l'image de la parfaite pureté et sainteté, (Jean 1.5-7) à 1'exclusion de toutes ténèbres, de toute souillure. (Comparer Actes 20.32 ; 26.18 ; Ephésiens 5.5)
