Voir sur ce grand fait de la réconciliation le passage correspondant de l'épître aux Ephésiens, (Ephésiens 2.13-18 notes) où l'apôtre développe plus au long sa pensée ; et sur ces mots : toutes choses, celles qui sont au ciel et celles qui sont sur la terre, Ephésiens 1.10, note. Là, au lieu du verbe réconcilier, se trouve celui de réunir ou résumer toutes choses en Christ, mais l'idée est la même au fond. Seulement ici toute cette œuvre de réconciliation, de restauration est ramenée au grand sacrifice du Sauveur qui en est la cause efficiente : Ayant fait la paix par le sang de sa croix. Ces derniers mots expliquent les premiers du verset : par lui.

Les interprètes ne s'accordent pas sur la personne désignée par avec lui ; les uns le rapportent à Christ, les autres à Dieu ; cette dernière opinion est la plus probable et la plus conforme à l'analogie d'autres passages. (Romains 5.10 ; 2Corinthiens 5.18-20)

- Les mots par lui, après ceux-ci : ayant fait la paix, sont omis dans quelques manuscrits, leur répétition ayant paru oiseuse. Paul insiste sur Celui qui est l'auteur et le moyen de la réconciliation.
