Chapitre 4.

Paul a dit aux esclaves : "Il n'y a point d'acception de personnes ;" (Colossiens 3.25) il dit aux maîtres (Grec : "seigneurs") : Vous avez un Seigneur dans le ciel ; là se retrouve l'égalité, le motif suprême de tous les devoirs, fondé en Dieu même. On pourrait demander à la "morale indépendante" comment elle remplace ce motif, surtout pour de pauvres esclaves, en présence de l'égoïsme humain.

Les maîtres doivent accomplir leur devoir envers leurs serviteurs. (Colossiens 4:1)
Les personnes de tout rang doivent persévérer dans la prière. La prudence chrétienne. (Colossiens 4:2-6)
L'apôtre s'en réfère à d'autres, pour leur exposer ses différents problèmes. (Colossiens 4:7-9)
Il envoie ses salutations et conclut avec une bénédiction. (Colossiens 4:10-18)

L'apôtre continue son exposé sur le devoir des maîtres envers leurs serviteurs. Il souligne, non seulement que la justice soit respectée de part et d’autre, mais aussi qu’une stricte équité soit accompagné de bienveillance. Que les maîtres agissent envers leurs serviteurs comme ils voudraient que Dieu les traite eux-mêmes !
