La première année... En 538, au moment où le second empire venait de renverser le premier. C'était un moment solennel pour le prophète ; ce fut probablement cette même année qu'eurent lieu les événements racontés chapitre 6. On comprend comment, après avoir reçu l'exaucement de son ardente supplication, Daniel fut encouragé à persévérer dans ses prières (6.10).

En lisant les livres. On a appliqué parfois cette expression à tout le recueil de l'Ancien Testament, formé longtemps après l'époque de Daniel, et on y a trouvé ainsi une preuve contre la composition de ce chapitre par Daniel. Mais dans ce cas, le faussaire aurait été plus maladroit qu'il n'est permis de le supposer. On peut remarquer que, dans le temps des anciens prophètes, chacun d'eux cite plus ou moins textuellement les écrits de ses devanciers ; ainsi Joël cite Abdias ; Amos, Joël ; Esaïe, Michée, Jérémie, un grand nombre des prophètes antérieurs. Ils possédaient donc un recueil des écrits prophétiques précédents et pourquoi n'en aurait-il pas été ainsi de Daniel ? Il est donc naturel de penser que par l'expression : les livres, il désigne les écrits prophétiques, et peut-être plus spécialement celui de Jérémie.

Soixante et dix ans. Les deux prophéties de Jérémie où il est question de ces soixante et dix ans se trouvent en Jérémie 25.11, Jérémie 29.10. Le point de départ de cette période est pour Jérémie la première arrivée de Nébucadnetsar à Jérusalem, la quatrième ou au plus tard la cinquième année de Jéhojakim (606-605 avant J-C). C'est ainsi que l'auteur du livre des chroniques (2Chroniques 36.21) et de celui d'Esdras (Esdras 1.1) ont aussi compris Jérémie. Ce fut, il est vrai, en 588 seulement que Jérusalem fut réduite en ruines et la masse du peuple emmenée en captivité, mais le châtiment commença dès le moment où le pays fut ravagé, et une partie des vases sacrés transportés à Babylone. C'est cette même année (606-605) que Daniel lui-même fut exilé de son pays, et il n'est pas douteux qu'il ne fixât dans sa pensée le commencement des soixante et dix ans à cette année-là. Quant au terme de ces soixante et dix ans, d'après le chapitre 25 de Jérémie, il devait être marqué par la chute de la puissance chaldéenne, événement qui avait eu lieu sous les yeux de Daniel (5.30). Mais, d'après le chapitre 29 de ce même prophète, cette chute devait être signalée par le rétablissement d'Israël, fait qui n'avait pas encore eu lieu, car, en réalité, il s'est écoulé deux ans entre la chute de Babylone (538) et le retour des Juifs (536). Il y avait là une cause d'indécision et d'angoisse pour le prophète, qui contribua sans doute à le pousser à la prière.
