Voilà les grands privilèges spirituels auxquels les païens étaient étrangers, et sur lesquels se fondait le salut de tout Israélite éclairé et croyant : Christ, le Messie et Sauveur qu'annonçaient toutes les alliances de la promesse, désignées ainsi au pluriel parce qu'elles furent souvent réitérées, (comparez Romains 9.4) mais ayant toujours pour objet la même promesse du Sauveur qui devait venir.

La république ou l'état d'Israël était l'institution extérieure qui renfermait tous ces privilèges et tous les vrais croyants. Etrangers à cette communion, les païens n'avaient point d'espérance, précisément parce qu'ils n'avaient pas la promesse. Et par toutes ces causes, ils étaient sans Dieu (Grec : "athées") dans le monde, monde de ténèbres et de misères !

- "On pourrait penser que l'apôtre, par cette dernière déclaration, se met en contradiction avec Romains 1.19, où il attribue aux païens une certaine connaissance de Dieu, et avec le fait historique que quelques-uns d'entre eux s'élevèrent au-dessus des superstitions du peuple et jusqu'à une connaissance de Dieu plus pure. Il ne faut pas chercher à résoudre cette contradiction apparente en disant que Paul ne parle que des païens qui vivaient réellement dans l'aveuglement spirituel, et qu'il considérait un Socrate, un Platon comme n'étant plus païens. Il parle de la totalité des nations étrangères aux privilèges du peuple d'Israël. Mais ce qu'il y a à dire, c'est que la connaissance naturelle de Dieu, telle que nous la trouvons en quelques penseurs et quelques sages, ne saurait être comparée à celle qui régnait parmi les Juifs, parce qu'elle n'était point le résultat d'un enseignement divin et d'une communication de Dieu à l'homme, mais seulement la conclusion d'un raisonnement sur un Dieu inconnu, éloigné, conclusion tirée de la considération de la nature et de la conscience. Or Dieu, de l'aveu des anciens eux-mêmes, ne peut être vraiment connu que s'il se révèle. (Comparer 1Corinthiens 8.3) La connaissance que les païens avaient de Dieu, autant du moins qu'elle mérite ce nom, est donc plutôt négative que positive, et l'aveu de Socrate : Tout ce que je sais, c'est que je ne sais rien, en est l'expression exacte." L'expression absolue de l'apôtre est applicable aussi à tous ceux qui, même au sein de la chrétienté, ne sont point éclairés dans leur vie intérieure par la révélation de la grâce de Dieu en Christ. Ne pas aimer Dieu, ne pas vivre pour lui, c'est n'avoir point de Dieu.
