Par opposition à hommes faits. (Ephésiens 4.13 ; comparez 1Corinthiens 3.1 ; 14.20)

La conjonction afin que se rattache à la pensée de Ephésiens 4.11,12. Paul expose d'abord ce qui empêche les progrès vers l'unité parfaite ; (Ephésiens 4.14) puis, dans les deux versets qui suivent, il indique les moyens positifs de réaliser ces progrès.

Rester enfants dans la foi et la connaissance, et dès lors flotter à tout vent de doctrine, comme un vaisseau sans gouvernail, voilà 1e principal empêchement à l'unité, et l'expérience confirme abondamment le jugement de l'apôtre. (Comparer Hébreux 13.9 ; Jacques 1.6)

Mais ces fausses doctrines ne sont jamais des erreurs purement intellectuelles et, par suite, innocentes. L'Ecriture nous y montre toujours une tendance morale, un fruit de la corruption du cœur. (Comparer 2Corinthiens 4.3,4)

Ainsi l'apôtre les attribue ici à la tromperie des hommes (le mot grec exprime la tromperie d'un homme qui joue avec des dés falsifiés, qui triche au jeu), et à leur ruse qui est conforme aux artifices, aux voies détournées de l'égarement, ou de l'erreur.
