Au lieu de la tournure dubitative de cette citation, (Psaumes 4.5) permise par le grec et l'hébreu : si vous vous mettez en colère, plusieurs interprètes admettent littéralement le double impératif de l'original : "Mettez-vous en colère et ne péchez point."

Il y a, disent-ils, une colère juste et sainte, qui est permise, pourvu qu'en l'éprouvant on se garde de pécher.

Mais, puisque même cette colère-là est si voisine du péché, comment l'apôtre pourrait-il la commander ? Si elle est louable pourquoi doit-elle passer avant le coucher du soleil, c'est-à-dire s'apaiser bientôt ? Pourquoi l'apôtre emploie-t-il, à la fin du verset, un autre mot (exaspération) qui évidemment suppose de la passion dans ce mouvement de l'âme ? Pourquoi défend-il, peu après, toute colère ? (Ephésiens 4.31 ; comparez Colossiens 3.8) Pourquoi enfin nous montre-t-il dans la colère une tentation diabolique qui est à la porte ? (Ephésiens 4.27)

Il faut donc laisser à cet impératif, comme l'ont fait la plupart des commentateurs grecs, le sens du doute, d'une supposition, sens qui se présente fréquemment lorsque deux impératifs se suivent dans la même phrase.

- L'apôtre a cité exactement la version grecque des Septante. L'hébreu porte : "tremblez et ne péchez point." Mais ce mot signifie aussi l'émotion de la colère. C'est l'exégèse qui doit en fixer le sens dans le psaume.
