Voilà ce qui constitue l'éternelle unité des rachetés du Sauveur ! L'apôtre ne fait que nommer ces grands objets de la foi, dont chacun est un, indivisible, fondant l'unité de tous ceux qui y ont part, et il ne juge pas nécessaire d'y ajouter aucune explication, ni aucune réflexion.

Un seul corps rappelle ce qu'il a enseigné déjà ; (Ephésiens 2.15,16) cette belle image lui sert fréquemment à dépeindre l'Eglise dans ses rapports avec Christ. (Romains 12.5 ; 1Corinthiens 10.17 ; 12.12-30)

Un seul Esprit (non l'esprit de l'homme ou l'esprit chrétien, comme le veut encore Calvin, mais l'Esprit de Dieu), lien toutpuissant, vivant et intime, qui unit nécessairement tous ceux qu'il pénètre, conduit et sanctifie.

Une seule espérance de la même vocation pour le royaume de Dieu : comment seraient-ils divisés, ceux qui doivent passer l'éternité dans le même élément de vie et d'amour ?

Un seul Seigneur, le même Maître auquel tous obéissent : "Christ est-il divisé ?" (1Corinthiens 1.13)

Une seule foi envisagée, non dans son objet, puisque tout ce que nous croyons est déjà énoncé ici, mais dans sa nature intime, produisant en tous les mêmes sentiments, la même vie chrétienne.

Un seul baptême, nommé ici sans doute parce qu'il est le symbole commun de l'introduction de tous dans l'Eglise, le signe extérieur de la régénération par le Saint-Esprit, laquelle nous rend un avec Christ et avec ses membres.

Enfin et surtout, un seul Dieu et Père, dont l'amour éternel, répandu dans le cœur de ses enfants, fait d'eux tous des frères, dans le sens le plus réel et le plus intime du mot : quelle unité !

Et ce Dieu trois fois saint, dont cette épître rappelle sans cesse l'action pour la rénovation de l'homme pécheur, se révèle ainsi à nous comme Celui qui est au-dessus de tous par sa puissance et sa grâce infinies ; parmi tous, en son Fils bien-aimé, qui l'a remis en communion avec nous ; en nous tous, par son Esprit qui habite au dedans de nous. (Comparer Romains 11.36 ; 1Corinthiens 8.6 ; 12.4-6 ; 2Corinthiens 13.13)

- D'excellents interprètes refusent de voir dans ces dernières paroles l'expression d'un rapport trinitaire de Dieu à l'homme, et ils les appliquent uniquement à la présence et à l'action de Dieu le Père.

"Dieu par l'Esprit de sanctification s'étend envers tous les membres de l'Eglise et les comprend tous sous sa domination, et habite en tous." Calvin.

En faveur de cette explication, on peut remarquer que la préposition que nous traduisons par parmi, n'a pas le sens local de au milieu de, mais exprime plutôt la pénétration de tous par l'Esprit de Dieu, l'action divine traversant tous les cœurs ; tandis que le troisième terme exprime l'habitation de Dieu en tous. Il n'y a donc pas de répétition oiseuse dans l'emploi de ces prépositions diverses.
