Ce titre de saints, (Romains 1.7, note) qui rappelle sans cesse aux chrétiens ce qu'ils doivent être, est bien propre à leur faire sentir aussi que même le nom de ces vices, ou le moindre soupçon qu'ils puissent y avoir part, forme une contradiction criante avec leur destination.

Tous les types d’immoralité doivent être éradiqués. Ces péchés doivent être redoutés et bannis.

Ce texte ne comporte pas que des avertissements relatifs aux transgressions gravissimes, mais aussi à tout ce qui peut les révéler. Ces pratiques dégradantes sont si nuisibles à l’âme, qu'elles polluent et souillent littéralement l’entourage de ceux qui les pratiquent.

Lorsque nous devenons chrétiens, notre bonne humeur doit être manifeste, elle doit mettre en valeur la Gloire de Dieu. Un homme cupide fait de son argent son dieu ; il place son espérance, sa confiance et sa raison de vivre, dans les biens de ce monde, au lieu de se consacrer au Seigneur.

Ceux qui se complaisent dans la convoitise et dans l'amour du monde, n'appartiennent pas au Royaume de la Grâce, ils ne parviendront jamais à connaître la Gloire divine. Quand les plus vils transgresseurs se repentent et croient en l'Évangile, ils deviennent des « enfants d'obéissance », et de ce fait n’ont plus à craindre le courroux divin.

Oserons-nous vraiment chercher ce qui pourrait nous amener à subir la colère de Dieu ? Les pécheurs, semblables à des hommes errants dans les ténèbres, ne savent où ils vont, ni ce qu'ils font. Mais la Grâce de Dieu est tout à fait capable d’opérer de puissants changements dans l’âme du pécheur.

Marchons comme des « enfants de lumière », dans la connaissance de la Parole et dans la sainteté. Les œuvres des ténèbres sont toutes stériles, quels que soient les profits qu’elles peuvent engendrer ; toutes se terminent par la destruction du pécheur impénitent.

De nombreux chemins favorisent la complicité avec les iniques ; il est très facile de prendre part aux péchés des autres, suite à de mauvais conseils, des faiblesses ou certaines dissimulations... Si nous partageons avec d'autres leurs péchés, nous devrons aussi craindre de partager leurs fléaux. Si nous ne blâmons pas les péchés des autres, nous en sommes alors les complices...

Un homme pieux aura honte de parler du péché, alors que de nombreux iniques n’éprouvent aucun scrupule à le pratiquer. Nous ne devons pas reconnaître simplement l’existence et l’horreur du péché, mais nous devons le considérer en tant qu’infraction à la sainte loi de Dieu.

Après les différents appels à la repentance, des prophètes et des apôtres, nous devons inciter ceux qui sont « endormis et morts » dans le péché, à se « réveiller et à se lever », pour que Christ puisse leur donner la Lumière !
